This is proper double-handed rod fishing with a 12 to 14 ft rod with a floating line and usually small flies. The potential for good-sized fish is very real. Wading is mixed with some pools very easy, others more demanding.
The Sog empties the famous Lake Thingvallavatn. It is a wide valley and the river is very wide in places but the fishing spots are perfectly fishable with a double-handed rod. The birdlife and sounds on the river and around the lodge are magical.
The lodge is a small, private set up away from any road noise. For 2022, the bedrooms vary in size but the lodge will be fully up to speed for 2023. The views out over the river and larger valley are beautiful. It really is an attractive, private setting.
Emptying Lake Thingvallavatn makes for very clear water. Some pools require a long flat wade, others are plain easy but a couple can keep you on your toes. Some pools have clear holding spots while others require consistance, covering many possible lies.
With nets being removed, catch and release in force, and the lodge upgrades, the Sog has real potential to be 'the' best big fish river in Iceland. Combine this with the great char fishing and the location of the lodge, it really is a tempting option.
