Lake Ljotipollur

Fishing inside a caldera, an amazing experience from start to finish

The Highlands in Iceland are an area of amazing beauty that was created by the extreme geologic upheaval of the earth. Amidst the peaks in a mountainous area is Volcano Lake. To drive up the side of a dormant volcano and crest the top to view the caldera is something that you will never forget. The sight of the blood red rocks dotted by the chartreuse moss against a black ash background is a colour palette that has to be seen to be believed. But when you add the fact that there are brown trout living in the waters inside the volcano you have a fishing experience that you have to try while in Iceland.

    The Lodge

The Highlands program offers a comfortable lodge that can accommodate up to 10 guests in five bedrooms. The newly renovated building and trained staff will work hard to make your stay memorable off the water.

    The Water

The lake is mainly waded from one bank and the hard bottom allows you to move to fish for cruising fish. The underwater volcanic shelf does drop off on the far side of the lake where the volcano plunges straight down from the top of the caldera.

    Outlook

They may not be very big fish but what they lack in size, they make up for in beauty. Then there is getting there and the location itself. Both are an experience in themselves. Best fished in the evening to ensure solitude from potential general tourists.
